Privacy Policy
Effective Date: April 1, 2026 | Last Updated: April 11, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how the Martha’s Vineyard Area of Narcotics Anonymous (MVANA)
(“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects information provided by individuals
(“you” or “end user”) who contact us through our NA phoneline and text-messaging services.
Our phoneline exists to connect individuals seeking recovery from addiction with
Narcotics Anonymous members and meeting information. We are committed to protecting
your anonymity — a cornerstone of the NA program — and to handling any information
you share with care and discretion.
1. Information We Collect
When you call or text our phoneline, we may collect:
- Your phone number (provided automatically by your carrier)
- The date, time, and duration of your call or message
- Content of text messages you send to our service number
- Voicemail recordings left for our service (where applicable)
We do not ask for, require, or store your name, address, email address,
or any other personally identifying information. You are never required to identify yourself
to receive assistance.
2. How We Use Your Information
Information collected through the phoneline is used solely to:
- Route your call or text to an available NA member volunteer or helpline
- Return missed calls or follow up on unanswered messages
- Generate anonymous, aggregated statistics to improve service coverage
(e.g., peak call hours, call volume by region) - Comply with applicable laws and our telephone service provider’s requirements
3. Text Messaging (SMS/MMS) Disclosures
If you opt in to receive text messages from our service, the following applies:
- Message frequency varies based on your inquiry.
- Standard message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile carrier plan.
- You may opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message.
You will receive one final confirmation message and no further texts will be sent. - Reply HELP for assistance or contact us using the information below.
- We do not share your phone number or message content with third-party marketers.
- Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
4. Sharing of Information
We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise disclose your information to
third parties for commercial purposes. Your information may be shared only in the following
limited circumstances:
- Service providers: We use Twilio, Inc. as our telephony platform.
Twilio processes call and message data on our behalf under their own privacy policy
and applicable data-processing agreements. - Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required to do so
by law, court order, or governmental authority. - Safety: If we have a good-faith belief that disclosure is necessary
to prevent imminent harm to you or others, we may share relevant information with
emergency services.
5. Data Retention
Call logs and message metadata are retained for up to 90 days for
operational purposes (e.g., troubleshooting missed calls) and then deleted. Voicemail
recordings are deleted within 30 days of being reviewed by a service
volunteer. Aggregated, anonymized statistical data may be retained indefinitely.
6. Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information
associated with our phoneline services. Access to call logs and message records is
restricted to trusted service body volunteers with a legitimate operational need.
7. Children’s Privacy
Our phoneline is open to anyone seeking recovery information, including minors.
We do not knowingly collect additional personal data from children under 13 beyond
what is described in this policy. If a parent or guardian believes we have inadvertently
collected information about a child, please contact us so we can promptly delete it.
8. Your Rights
Because we collect minimal information and store it only briefly, most requests for
access, correction, or deletion can be addressed by contacting us directly. We will
make reasonable efforts to honor such requests within 30 days.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page
with a revised effective date. Continued use of our phoneline after changes are posted
constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
